The Reed Song

by Rumi

Listen to a simple story told by a reed,

taken from its home.

Here’s a tale for all you people,

Who’ve wandered lost and all alone.

“Since I was cut from out the reedbed,

I have made this crying sound.

Anyone apart from a true love,

knows the sorrow that I have found.

Anyone pulled from a source and center,

and taken far from house and home.

Longs to return to where the roots are,

longs to rest, no more to roam.

Now if you gather I to will be there,

in the laughter and the grief,

A friend to one and to the other,

above, behind, before, and beneath.

La illaha illa Allah

La illaha illa Allah

La illaha illa Allah

La illaha illa Allah

But few will hear the deepest secrets,

Hidden in my trembling air.

There are no ears that can hear these secrets,

only a heart that is stripped and bare.

Body flows from out of spirit,

spirit flows from out of form.

We can’t conceal that mystic mixing,

nor see the soul when it’s never been born.

This flute is filled with God’s own fire,

no Earthly wind can play its tune.

Just be that empty, and be that hollow.

Reflect the light like the full moon.

La illaha illa Allah

La illaha illa Allah

La illaha illa Allah

La illaha illa Allah

Hear the love-fire full of yearning,

tangled with each note in space.

As bewilderment and my heart’s sorrow

turns into wine of amazing grace.

The reed is a friend to every pilgrim,

who prays the veil be torn away.

The reed is hurt and salve combining,

darkness night and brightest day.

Intimacy and the longing for it,

a single song they have become one.

A disastrous, complete surrender

and finest love, becoming one.

And finest love, becoming one.

Listen to a simple story told by a reed,

taken from its home.

Here’s a tale for all you people,

Who’ve wandered lost and all alone.

La illaha illa Allah

La illaha illa Allah

La illaha illa Allah

La illaha illa Allah

La illaha illa Allah

La illaha illa Allah

La illaha illa Allah

La illaha illa Allah

La illaha illa Allah

La illaha illa Allah

La illaha illa Allah

La illaha illa Allah

La illaha illa Allah

La illaha illa Allah

La illaha illa Allah

La illaha illa Allah
