Oil Pulling

Hippocrates is credited with saying, “Let food be thy medicine.” As well, Ann Wigmore said, “The food you eat can be either the safest and most powerful form of medicine or the slowest form of poison.” I am trying to implement a healthier diet, which is not an easy task when you have many children. They are just as stuck in a rut as I am and by my teaching. I hope to cut meat nearly completely out of my diet and increase the organic vegetables and fruits. That will take baby steps, but baby steps usually lead to running after a few stumble and falls.

In the meantime, I have been hearing a lot about oil pulling. It is an Ayurvedic treatment to improve oral health and a means of detoxification. I have been battling a cold/virus for sometime and was feeling extremely crappy, so I thought to give it a try. After three days, I felt much better. Granted this just may have been the time that the virus had ended, but oil pulling will not harm, it could only improve my health and decided to stick to it.

I decided to use coconut oil because it does not have a strong smell nor an intense flavor. When you first wake up in the morning, you drink two cups of water to get your saliva in action. Then you take in a tablespoon of oil and swish in your mouth. You do so for five minutes and build up to fifteen minutes. You then spit out in the garbage as it will clog your sink and is purported to be full of toxins. I say “purported” as I have no proof of this.

Oil pulling improves oral health. As you may or may not know, your oral health is an indication of your overall health. Bacteria from your mouth can travel the bloodstream and cause infection in other parts of your body. Oral infections can lead to sinus infections, infections in the heart and infections in the brain. Some studies suggest that 19% of hospitalizations are from untreated oral infections. In 2012, 488 people had incision and drainage done in New York hospitals, with 248 of those patients being hospitalized.

Ayurvedic medicine suggest that there are additional benefits of oil pulling, including the following:

  • Relief of migraine headaches
  • Hormone balance
  • Inflammation reduction
  • Insomnia reduction
  • Pain relief
  • Detoxification of heavy metals
  • Kidney function support
  • Bronchitis treatment

I will add one more plus to oil pulling, especially with coconut oil… it makes your lips softer than any chapstick.
